Titanites

Named By: Buckman - 1921.
Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Cephalopoda, Ammonoidea.
Species: T. occidentalis, T. anguiformis, T. chilensis, T. cingulatus, T. giganteus.
Diet: Carnivore/Piscivore.
Size: Shells of largest known individuals have a shell diameter of up to 137 centimetres, though most specimens are smaller than this.
Known locations: England, as well as other parts of Western Europe. Possibly further afield than this.
Time period: Late Jurassic.
Fossil representation: Shells, many of which are complete.

       Titanites is a genus of large ammonite that lived in the oceans of the late Jurassic. Titanites would have been an open water predator and is noted for its large shell, though even large Titanites pale in comparison to the largest specimens of Parapuzosia.
