As
a shastasaurid ichthyosaur, Callawayia was
related to giant
ichthyosaurs such as Shonisaurus
and the type genus of the group,
Shastasaurus.
These ichthyosaurs are usually seen as deep sea
hunters of animals like squid, although like all marine reptiles,
they would have inevitably have had to return to the surface for air.
The
second species, C. altispinus, is named after
the proportionately
taller neural spines of the vertebrae.
