As a shastasaurid ichthyosaur,‭ ‬Callawayia was related to giant ichthyosaurs such as Shonisaurus and the type genus of the group,‭ ‬Shastasaurus.‭ ‬These ichthyosaurs are usually seen as deep sea hunters of animals like squid,‭ ‬although like all marine reptiles,‭ ‬they would have inevitably have had to return to the surface for air.
The second species,‭ ‬C.‭ ‬altispinus,‭ ‬is named after the proportionately taller neural spines of the vertebrae.
