Stensioella is a fish genus known to have lived in the waters of what is now Germany during the Devonian. Usually Stensioella is identified as a placoderm fish, though one that is very primitive in form. However, the holotype specimen of Stensioella shows only a similar shoulder joint. This has led other researchers to speculate that Stensioella may not actually be a placoderm fish, but something called a chimaeriforme, a type of cartilaginous fish and relative to sharks and rays. Indeed, whenever Stensioella gets reconstructed, it usually ends up resembling something like a modern day ratfish, which themselves are chimaeriformes.
