Protobrama was named for the physical similarity to another genus of fish named Brama. Also known as Pomfrets, Brama are deep water fish that commonly go down to depths of a thousand meters. We cannot say for certain if Protobrama were fish that lived at such deep depths, but the physical similarity suggests that they fulfilled a similar ecological niche of a deep water carnivore of small marine creatures.
