Andrewsornis

Name: Andrewsornis (Andrew’s bird).
Phonetic: An-dru-sor-niss.
Named By: Patterson - 1941.
Classification: Chordata, Aves, Cariamae, Phorusrhacidae, Patagornithinae.
Species: A. abbotti (type).
Diet: Carnivore.
Size: Up to 1.7 meters tall.
Known locations: Argentina.
Time period: Middle to late Oligocene.
Fossil representation: Enough fossils to represent a single species.

       Andrewsornis is one of the intermediate sized ‘terror birds’ and would have relied upon a balance of speed and power to hunt prey. The members of the Phorusrhacidae most closely related to Andrewsornis were the other members of the Patagornithinae subfamily which includes Andalgalornis and Patagornis.
